Unchanged

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited those devoted to them.

Hebrews 13:8–9, ESV

The preacher in the book of Ecclesiastes reminds us that there is “nothing new under the sun.” Sin is sin, and that reality has not changed. The things God deemed sinful in His giving of the Commandments to Moses on Mount Sinai are still the same today as they have always been. We may find traditions that number them differently, but the core is unchanged. There is no new revelation from God because it is clear in the Word provided for us by God. The Word speaks and continues to speak as we read it and hear it read. The proclamation of this Word is given so that we may hear it spoken anew regularly. The meaning does not change, and Christ does not either. At the time of the writer of Hebrews and still today, we find that there are those that tempt away followers of Christ into different paths centered on self and discovering a new thing. Sadly, these only darken the hearts of many and lead them into paths that confuse them. What we eat does not save us eternally, and no sacrifice we make can satisfy God. If the Word is contradicted, then it is not of God but comes from the heart of a person. Our hearts are sinful and deceitful. Our feelings will trick us and cause us to do things that are not in line with what God desires for us. That is why, for many, love can be a fickle thing where someone can be deeply infatuated one day and disdain the object of that infatuation the next. With God, it is not so. God’s love for us, just as His Word, remains. We need not trouble ourselves in seeking out a new thing but seek the face of God in prayer and life through His Word revealed to us over and over again throughout the generations.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
