“Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me; if to the left, then I will go to the right; or if to the right, then I will go to the left.”
Genesis 13:9, LSB
These words of Abraham to his nephew are words that can teach us the heart of God. Abraham set aside his own rights for the sake of his nephew and let him take what one would think of as the choicest of land. God was not in the midst of Lot’s choice and, for those of us who know his story, we know how that turned out for him. When faced with any choice, it is good for us to be mindful and seek guidance from God. We may believe what stands before us is better than it truly is and may even be a lure that could lead us away from God. God will offer us protection and guidance. He will call us to set aside our will for His. Even so, we may resist and be placed in danger. God did not forget Lot for the sake of Abraham, but there was a cost. Let us be mindful of God in all things and seek after His heart and in Him, we may find peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
