Now it happened that when Jesus had finished giving instructions to His twelve disciples, He departed from there to teach and preach in their cities.
Matthew 11:1, LSB
Jesus’ purpose was clear, to teach and preach. He healed and did miracles, but we find Him moving from city to city and preaching and teaching. He was building the Church. He had instructed His twelve disciples to do the same because the truth needed to be spread far. The mandate of God has not changed. We are proclaimed to share the faith and what we have been taught with all. This is not just for the pastor on Sunday morning but for every Christian every day. Our faith is not meant to be kept contained within four walls, but to be spread to the ends of the earth. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is a transformative word that brings a promise. The promise we carry is new life here and life eternal in the kingdom of heaven. The word of God changes lives. This is what was seen as it spread to many places where women were seen as property and were raised in position and treatment when their husbands converted. It brought peace where it was proclaimed rightly and in its purity. The words that Jesus brought are a threat to power as all are called to be humbled under the banner of Christ. He came with a word of authority, not of world leaders, but of God. The priesthood of all believers was given, and the Bible was opened for all to read and hear. It is in this we can find our comfort and our peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
