Luke 1:5–6

In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah. And he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. And they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord.

Luke 1:5–6, ESV

As we begin and read about Zechariah and Elizabeth, we are given a time and a lineage that ties Zechariah to David because he was descended from a loyal priest and his wife, Elizabeth, to the Aaronic priesthood. These were not just any people but of the chosen of God’s chosen. This was to establish the forerunner who would bring us all into the line of God’s chosen people. Nothing God does is by accident but is very purposeful. This is our faith. For all who believe and trust in God, He has chosen. The circumstances in your life, like those of Elizabeth and Zechariah, can be used by God to show His glory to others. The same is true for how God can show His blessing in life by using people who would otherwise be seen as used up as they were childless into their old age. Never underestimate the power of God and seek not to know why God places you where you are, but search out the what and pursue His purposes in every aspect of your life.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
