But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, for He knew all men, and because He had no need that anyone bear witness concerning man, for He Himself knew what was in man.
John 2:24–25, LSB
God knows our nature. There is nothing we can hide from Him. He is all-knowing. Yet, how often do we like to act as if we are able to keep things from God? As Jesus walked with the disciples and taught, many saw His miracles and signs but wanted to challenge from where they came. They wanted Jesus to justify Himself and explain everything to their satisfaction. We haven’t changed much in two thousand years. How often do we act as if God must be answerable to us and not the other way around? Jesus showed us how to pray when He humbled Himself to the Father and said, “Not my will but yours.” This is the calling for us all as followers of Christ, to seek after the will of God. His will may not and most often does not match our own. As the old adage goes, we often can’t see the forest through the trees. Our hearts get in our way as we seek after and desire the worldly things and the affections of others while forgetting God. God knows what is in us and it is this that He seeks to change as we submit our will to His. It is in this, we may find peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
