For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

1 Corinthians 1:17, ESV

Paul is not saying that baptism is not important, but the primary power of Christ comes through the proclamation of the gospel. The gospel is not meant to be changed to make another more comfortable nor is it to be preached in a way that seems difficult to grasp, but in its purity that is simple and straightforward. A reminder of the cross and the sacrifice of Christ is ever before us. The cross is not some elegant symbol of power, but an ugly reminder of the death that our Lord received and upon which He took upon all sin for all time. It wasn’t made of gold but of rough wood. It wasn’t covered in oil but was soaked in our Lord’s blood and sweat. There is nothing eloquent or wise in understanding the cross, but it stands as a reminder of how little we have to be prideful of in our lives. It is a staunch reminder of our daily need to come to our Lord and receive His forgiveness. The cross isn’t something that would’ve been celebrated, but today we place it around our necks and before our altars. When we look at the cross, we are meant to see the suffering of our Lord. The gospel is to reflect this as we know that we are saved through our Lord’s sacrifice, and we have done nothing to earn or merit His grace and mercy. Our Lord gives and provides for us and we can trust as we hear the gospel that He is the one who brings peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
