“To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.”

John 10:3, LSB

Jesus is the good shepherd, and He knows all who belong to Him by name. He knows us intimately and desires to bring good to all of us. Unlike the cast images and wooden gods, our God is in a relationship with all who are His. We don’t have to question His love for us, nor do we have to make sure we do enough to satisfy Him. He did all He did for us and our salvation. Our lives and our devotion are the message that He has written on our hearts. Our faith is not a work righteousness-based faith, but we are a faith that believes in a living, loving God who understands us. This does not excuse us to do nothing because, as Martin Luther said, “God doesn’t need your works, but your neighbor does.” We serve not for our salvation, but to be a sign to others of the gift we have in Christ Jesus. When we are faithful to the calling of our Lord, we will know His protection and comfort from things of this world that will try to deceive us and draw us away from Him. If we are tempted, He will come to rescue us from the things that desire to rob us of eternal life. When we trust in Him, we will listen for His voice and know where He is leading. Ultimately, when we walk with Him, He will bring us peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
