The jar of flour was not spent, neither did the jug of oil become empty, according to the word of the LORD that he spoke by Elijah.

1 Kings 17:16, ESV

God’s chosen people lost sight of how God provided for His people at all times. Their hearts went after false gods and were easily dismayed during times of difficulty. Elijah was a prophet to the people and challenged the King of Israel to repent and turn back. He was faithful to give the Word of God to the people and did so at great risk to himself. God gave him a word of how he would be provided for during the three-year famine, which God had foretold to the people through him. God sent Elijah to a widow and advised him of how he would provide because he would keep the oil and the flour for him, the widow, and her son to be fed. It happened as had been foretold. God provides for His people and keeps His promises. It is His promises on which we are called to rely. He sent His Son in order to reconcile us to Himself, and He promised that Christ would return to restore all of Creation. We await this promise, knowing that until that day, He will continue to provide for those He has chosen.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
