“You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you.”
John 13:13–15, LSB
Jesus came to save us and show us how to treat one another as brothers and sisters in the faith. The most humbling act we can do is care for another brother and sister in Christ and place their needs above our own. This is an act that is internal to the faith, but an external example of the love of the people of God. If we follow the example of Christ, we will find that He welcomes those trapped in sin and penitent, calls out the self-righteous, and humbles Himself with His own as He leads them to His table. The great examples we see from our Lord are meant to teach and to be discipled at His feet. We are to learn the disciplines of what it means to follow God and walk in His paths. To teach us how to discern the things of this world and how we are meant to pray for one another. The Word of God is faithful in helping to separate the things of this world from the things of God. We are to look to the example of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and walk as nearly as we are able in the paths that He has prepared. In this we may be a light in the darkness and through this we may not only bring peace but also shine out the face of our Lord and see His face reflected back at us.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
