“But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.”

Matthew 6:6, LSB

Prayer is an intimate conversation between you and God. Many religions make prayer into a public production by making themselves look miserable and crying out to their gods. This is not what God wants from us. We can pray in public, but that should not be our only prayer, and often God wants us to spend time in quiet prayer with Him. We can express ourselves in many ways in prayer, but it is not meant to seek affirmation from others. Our Lord wants us to know Him intimately as a child should know his father, we are to pray to God our Father knowing He hears us. Our prayers are meant to express to God our most vulnerable parts and this is not something that most would comfortably do in public, nor should anyone truly want to. We come to God knowing He listens and is there for us to confide in. We don’t need to pray with flowery words that are pleasing to the ear but don’t necessarily mean a lot. Prayer is an expression of our innermost soul, and our God already knows but desires for us to express to Him openly. As we come to God in prayer, we are praying to someone, and the more we do this the more we may feel His presence and nearness to Him. In this, we may find His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
