“If it is evil in your sight to serve Yahweh, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve Yahweh.”

Joshua 24:15, LSB

If God offends you, you can not truly serve Him. God doesn’t force any to follow Him nor does He choose everyone. If the Word of God offends you because it causes you to rethink your life, where is the issue? Is it with God or with you? If you choose to be offended by God, your god is revealed. There are many gods which are in our world but there is only one true God from whom we receive eternal life. The Israelites, while they were in the wilderness, were able to see God’s presence in a pillar of smoke by day and fire by night, yet they rebelled. As they entered the promised land, they were able to witness God’s hand in helping them defeat their enemies, yet they rebelled and turned to other gods. We, too, are confronted by the myriad of idols that fill our world, but our Lord calls us to serve Him and Him alone. We cannot serve God and any other for us the choice is either to heed His call and humble ourselves by submitting to Him or to choose to live as one of the world. As we humble our hearts and give them over to Him, we may find peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
