The world is a spiritual wasteland full of many false religions and false gods. We may not see our devotion to these things as worship, but they offer nothing but continue to drain and take from us. These idols often offer momentary happiness but no hope. Our bodies yearn and thirst for something greater and, in Jesus, we find that. Jesus gives us more than a moment of happiness, but He offers an eternity filled with joy. Joy is not just silly laughter, but a sense of calm and an inner peace that extends throughout the lives of those who live and reflect on Him. Idols will guide us to mistake what they have to offer with what can only be offered in the truth of Christ. They will rename things using words like love and joy and none of that is in any of what they give. When we come to the Lord and drink deeply in His truth, we find the greatest refreshment of our souls as the truth is poured into us. It is His gift that will continue to give. It is in Him that we may find peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
