Right or Righteous?

“But I tell you, do not resist an evildoer. If someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also.”

Matthew 5:39, EHV

If we are being honest, I think many struggle with this statement of Jesus as well as those that follow. Humility is hard, especially when it comes to someone doing things you know to be wrong. My father-in-law struggled with this so much so that for much of his life it kept him from becoming a Christian. I am confident that he is not the only person who honestly lived with a mentality like his. I know that I struggle with it. It’s hard to stand down when you know you are right. This is the difference between righteousness and being right. Self-righteous people are not humble, but to be righteous in Christ is to live into His example. Jesus doesn’t expect us to go to the cross like He did, but He called us to bear the cross. Our burden is often in our humility and putting the message before ourselves. To humble ourselves to speak light into darkness and peace into times of struggle. Not all who do evil believe what they are doing is evil but are reacting to a situation or a broken belief system. Anger only breeds anger. If I strike a person with my fists or words, will it bring them closer to agreeing with me? I don’t believe that to be true. This is the truth which our Lord Jesus Christ is teaching when He speaks these words. Let our humility be our greatest witness as we speak the words of our Lord which will challenge those doing evil to change and find our peace in Christ.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
