For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.

2 Peter 1:4, LSB

The promises given to us by Jesus Christ are not only for the eternal life that we have to come, but we can live within the promises and the blessings in the here and now. In knowing that we must not be ruled by our sinful desires, we can walk in greater freedom. How so? If you are not fearful of condemnation that is placed on you from sin, then it is easier to let go of past mistakes and hurt and move forward with a mind to not engage. Shame and guilt are not what God desires for us, they often turn us back to doing that which we know to be sinful. The issue of sin is it may bring momentary pleasure but following comes regret, but shame will drive us back to it because our minds will feel that is a way of escape. It is a devilish cycle fed by a mindset that says, “Well, they are already judging me for having done it, so I might as well continue and, at least, be able to have that moment of enjoyment.” Christ frees us because He takes away all that sin, regret, and shame. He creates us as something wonderful and new that begins in the here and now and comes to fullness in eternity. In this, we may find our peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
