Do not quench the Spirit.
1 Thessalonians 5:19, LSB
What does it mean to quench the Spirit? This is a good question to ask of ourselves as we walk through faith. A clue is given in the verses that surround this passage as Paul is warning us to be in a period of regular discernment and prayer always seeking to edify one another in the faith. We should listen to the prophecies revealed to us within Scripture and any prophecy or teaching given by those who call themselves people of God be discerning. We are called to seek the good and avoid anything evil. Evil things may not be as clearly discerned if we look at them with worldly eyes but when covered in prayer and as we steep ourselves in the Word of God we will see more clearly. To quench the Spirit, ultimately, is to deny God. If we feel we must do it on our own without coming to God in prayer or trusting in God’s providence, we are robbed of something great that will build up the kingdom. If we ignore the warnings of God, we may fall into deep sin and lose sight of God completely. There have been and continue to be those who proclaim many false things in the name of Christ, and, of this, we are to be wary, but when we test everything to the Word, like the dross that falls away from the silver as it is put to fire, so will all the things that are not of God. We can always trust in God and His Word, and it is this we are called to seek after. In this, we may find peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
