Then the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate and carried and brought it to David. But he would not drink of it. He poured it out to the LORD.

2 Samuel 23:16, ESV

The bitterness of the fight had removed any pleasure from David so he could not enjoy even that which he craved. We may know some of these bitter moments in our lives. When the consequences of sin surround us. When we are surrounded by conflict our hearts can become overwhelmed and grief can become a bitter pill that consumes all pleasure and joy. It is here we are called to pour ourselves out to the Lord. For David, it was the reality of what was going on in his hometown and how the war had prevented him from being able to enter in and enjoy places that he knew from childhood. We may struggle with the different areas in our lives that may be changed because of our sin or the sin of others and in these moments, we are called to pour it out to the Lord. Only God can restore and bring things to right. He is the one who can bring correction. We can be utilized as His vessels as we teach others of the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ, but only He can restore. As we give our pain to God, the heartbreak and loss may not go away but healing can begin. We cannot make another change. We do not decide the salvation or condemnation of another, but when we pour out our worries and concerns to God, He will ease our suffering and clear our minds so we may know His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
