Poor In Spirit

Matthew 5:3

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

Matthew 5:3, LSB

The blessings given by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount don’t sound like great blessings because of the circumstances in which one is blessed. It is a reminder of our need to be fully reliant on God. Sadly, human nature is to approach God only when He is the last thing we have to hold onto. God desires not to be last on our list of things of importance. He is not satisfied with second place in our lives. God seeks to be first in the lives of all believers. Sadly, we find that God is often last on the tick sheet of life for many if He is on there at all. When we look at the Beatitudes, we find God’s heart for us and the humility to which He calls us. In the moment that we realize we cannot do it on our own and cry out to Him, we will find Him near at hand. It is that humbling moment that we lay down all the things we think are good and make us good before the feet of our Lord, that we find His arms extended to receive us. We are not good. We are not righteous. We are not saved. Except by the grace of God. When we see our own weakness and set down our suffering before Christ, humbling ourselves, we see the kingdom laid out before us. It is here we can know His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
