“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.”

John 14:27, LSB

Ignorance is bliss. It can be nice not always being aware of the issues going on around us, but reality will always become clear in time. Our Lord desires us to know peace, not out of ignorance, but to be always aware of who is in control and the knowledge that the end has already been written. To be afraid that the sky is falling and sounding alarms at every trouble only makes people less attuned to the warnings. If you live in a place commonly in the path of severe weather and there are alarms at every rumble, then people will ignore the alarms and go on with their lives until they see the danger for themselves. Jesus does not want us to be afraid. He doesn’t want us carrying around signs saying, “The end is near.” Our Lord desires for us to walk in constant awareness and stand vigilant in His Word knowing His peace in every situation. The message He offers is hope and promise. We walk in the hope that He can bring calm to every storm and bring healing for every illness, but, most importantly, we carry the promise that all of the things of this world will come to an end, and we will see a new heaven and a new earth. It isn’t in ignorance we walk, but in knowledge of the eternal gift that stands ever before us, and in this, we find our peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
