“Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you. Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven.”

Luke 10:19–20, LSB

In these words of Jesus, I don’t think this is a calling for all Christians to walk on snakes or scorpions. The promise is centered on the promise that our names are known by God and written in the Book of Life. It does not mean that we won’t suffer if a snake bites us or a scorpion stings us, but our immortal souls are protected, and we will not know the wrath of God as long as we remain faithful. God can protect us from these things, but we are reminded not to tempt God and put it to the test, like those who offered strange fire before the Tabernacle. Suffering is an aspect of life and we find that our Lord suffered and so did the saints of the early Church and many saints of the Lord still suffer today. Just before these words Jesus spoke of seeing Satan falling from heaven and the seventy-two had witnessed great miracles, yet we know their suffering did not end, but the battle is still before them and remains before us. We all have been given a mission, a calling, a purpose. We are meant to be fearlessly proclaiming the promise and the hope given to us by our Lord. We have been given the gift to lead those from darkness into light. Let us stand in the light of our Lord and proclaim His glory so that more may know His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
