And He said to them, “Why is it that you were searching for Me? Did you not know that I had to be in My Father’s house?”
Luke 2:49, LSB
Jesus’ words to his earthly father and mother were not out of disrespect for their concern but to highlight the reality that they should have known and trusted. They were not unaware of who He was and the purposes for which He was born, which had been made clear to them more than once. They had seemingly forgotten as they raised their son and were again made to realize that He was the Son. It highlights for us how Jesus’ childhood was not unlike most and the concern and care that Mary and Joseph had for Him. It reminds us of the humanity of our Lord as He walked with us in His creation. A humanity that remains and helps us to see how He can understand our pain and our suffering. God is not so distant from us but has known what living in this fallen world is like. The only difference is He did not sin. This difference is of great importance as He would take upon Himself all sin for all time. That was His calling, and it was written upon His heart. This is the Lord we worship. A Lord who knew the love of a father and a mother. He was the son of a carpenter and learned the trade of his earthly father. All this while His calling and reality of being God incarnate were ever present. It wasn’t that He became at some point, but He was both the son of Joseph and Mary and the Son of the most high God. For this reason, we can know that He lived and died for us so we may know His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
