Of Unclean Lips

Isaiah 6:5

Then I said, “Woe is me, for I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, And I live among a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, Yahweh of hosts.”

Isaiah 6:5, LSB

The awesome wonder of seeing God is something that is unimaginable. I could understand the fear of Isaiah. It is not often we think of the reality of God and who He is. So often, it seems, we treat God and our faith as something common. However, if we truly ponder the Word and the faith that we hold, we will find the danger in living in such a way. It is true that our Lord walked among us as the man Jesus. Yet, even in His humanity our Lord remained holy. He remained set apart from the ways of the world and was firmly walking in the ways of the Father. He did not sin. We treat the grace we receive as something cheap and live as if the salvation we are promised is something we deserve. Yet, there will be those who may live “good” lives in our eyes that will spend eternity separated from God. As followers of Christ, we are called to a greater humility in the realization that our eternal lives are given by the mercy of God, but not by our actions and it is He who cleanses us like the angel with the coal, not ourselves. Let us devote ourselves to being humble in our faith and seek Christ’s glory in our lives and in Him, we find our peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
