Indeed, this is God’s will: that you be sanctified, namely, that you keep yourselves away from sexual immorality. He wants each of you to learn to obtain a wife for yourself in a way that is holy and honorable, not in lustful passion like the heathen, who do not know God. No one is to overstep and take advantage of his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, just as we said previously and solemnly testified to it. For God did not call us for uncleanness, but in sanctification. Consequently, whoever rejects this is not rejecting a man, but the God who gives you his Holy Spirit.

1 Thessalonians 4:3–8, EHV

Our call to sanctification is not a call away from enjoyment and pleasure but is meant to protect us from losing out on the blessings that God intended. Some things never change. Since the Fall, marriage has been a struggle. It was designed to be the perfect union between man and woman as a complementary partnership for the propagation of children and to raise families, but that was broken. Through the Fall, lust entered with shame, and we need only read through the Bible and look through history to see the destruction that has been left in its path. In Christ, we are called to calm those passions and not be driven by them. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, our passions may be refocused and our love for spouse and the Lord can be more aligned. There is no better relationship between man and woman than in a Christ-centered marriage. Husband and wife together teach through their relationship how sons are to love their wives and how daughters should expect to be loved by their husbands and vice versa. A union sanctified and washed by Christ to reflect the union we are called to have with our Lord. Standing fast through all struggles and finding comfort in Christ’s peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
