Make sure that your way of life is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I WILL NEVER DESERT YOU, NOR WILL I EVER FORSAKE YOU,” so that we confidently say, “THE LORD IS MY HELPER, I WILL NOT BE AFRAID. WHAT WILL MAN DO TO ME?”

Hebrews 13:5–6, LSB

The love of money. Materialism is the great religion of society. Money is not the issue, but the heart and our desire for more or the fear of losing it plagues many. This is nothing new. Materialism creates a lack of contentment in the heart where the one who has much seeks for exceedingly more and the one who has little feels as if God has forgotten them. In it all, God seeks for us to let it all go. One must not live as a pauper or be embarrassed if he or she has means and no one should look with envy at what another has and despise the other in his or her heart. In the eyes of God, we should not lift up one who has wealth over one who does not but look upon the hearts of each and to whom they place their hope. God is our provider, and He will carry us through all things. We are to use all that we have to the glory of God and, if we see the one in need and have the means to help do so freely without hesitation, but if we don’t help where we are able. In it all, we walk with the knowledge that God is there, and in Him, we find our peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
