“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

Matthew 5:3, LSB

Where do you find hope? This is the central question of the Christian faith. It is the struggle that we all face. No one likes to feel poor and out of control. The chaos of the soul can overwhelm. We like to know we have a meal ahead of us, a roof to sleep under, and clothes to cover and protect us. Lack of these things not only draws us down emotionally but our spirits also. Who do we turn to? Jesus won’t solve our worldly sins, but He can lift and buoy our spirits. He can change how we view things and open doors to opportunities for change. The calling for us all is to place our hope in Him. Often, we cling to the world as if it is our only hope. The world will fail us, governments are not benevolent, and nature is cruel. God is merciful and caring. He lifts us from the mire of this world and brings us into His Kingdom. When we submit ourselves fully to our Lord, we may realize His providence in our lives. In Him, we are shown an alternative. It’s not about making us rich or even that we will not have any health issues, though those things can be changed through Him. What we find is our eyes are opened and our hearts are set free. No longer are we afraid because we have greater certainty. Like the disciples on the boat, we witness the waters calm and we can know His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
