And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him.”
Hebrews 12:5, ESV
One of my favorite movies as a child was Pinocchio. Geppetto the loving father and Jiminy Cricket the voice of the conscience always trying to keep Pinocchio on the right path, so he could become a real boy. Jiminy was not there to correct anyone but Pinocchio. His focus was clear, and he didn’t stray from it. The goal was to help Pinocchio become a real boy. We don’t have a cricket speaking words of correction regularly to us, but God has provided us with the Holy Spirit and will provide us with correction. This is one of the roles we commonly assign to the Holy Spirit. This is the advocate which our Lord, Jesus, promised. God does not and will not rubber-stamp what we think is good, just because we are having fun. God’s correction is not to ruin our fun but to keep us from falling into a trap that will rob us of eternal life and could harm us. As a child, there were many things that I did that could have caused great harm to me, but I was unaware of the danger and only saw the fun aspect of them. We may not always be aware of the danger that stands before us, but we are called to listen and be faithful to follow the direction of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Not because God desires to ruin our fun, but because God wants to protect us for eternity. Like my father once strongly rebuked me for jumping my snowmobile over a road by using the edge of a deep ditch as a ramp, he did so not to ruin my fun, but because he loved me and did not want to see me hurt. So it is with God as He calls us away from danger and into His warm embrace. In this, we may find peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
