Then Joshua said to the people, “You will not be able to serve Yahweh, for He is a holy God. He is a jealous God; He will not forgive your transgression or your sins.”

Joshua 24:19, LSB

Can you choose God? Some believe this to be true, but the reality found throughout the Bible is that it is God who chooses us all we can do is choose to submit to Him. We may serve the King, or we may rebel against His rule, but we cannot do both. As we submit to our Lord, we find His care and providence. We are strengthened in our living as we are guided by His Word. Our God is jealous of our devotion and will not stand to have our devotion divided even if it be for our family. Thankfully, in Christ, we can find forgiveness and throughout the history of Israel, God’s mercy is evident. He will forgive us for our failures, but it requires humility in our hearts to submit to Him. His jealousy does not subside for our faith and devotion because we speak words of contrition, but He redeems us with a desire that we will return to faithfulness and not fall into sin again. God’s forgiveness does not excuse us to willfully sin but relieves us of the sins about which we are contrite. We need not be fearful of His wrath when we humble ourselves and ask for His grace. In this, we may find peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
