“You foolish ones, did not He who made the outside make the inside also?”

If you move around or travel you may be familiar with the comment, “Do as the Greeks do it.” It speaks to learning and watching the customs of those around you and trying to respect the traditions and customs of the place you are visiting. The reason for this is that you do not want to offend and there are people in various places that may become offended if those customs and traditions were not kept. The Pharisees were like this and had created a whole system of things that must be done and to not follow them was a religious offense. We shouldn’t allow customs and traditions to take a central place in our faith. This does not mean traditions and customs are bad. Many come out of practicality and can be quite beneficial. Jesus speaks to the faith side of things and calls out how their practices are merely for appearance because they forget to keep the Word of God. All the customs and traditions in the world will not bring salvation. Only Christ and Christ alone is the answer. For the Pharisees, though He was before them, they did not recognize their Lord because they had placed their practices higher than the Word. This is what the Lord calls us to remember. In the Word, we find the truth and it is here and here alone we are meant to find peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
