But when the ruler heard these words, he became very sad, because he was very rich.

Luke 18:23, EHV

I have found it odd when people leave the Church when there are difficulties. Disputes with other believers, family difficulties, financial difficulties, health difficulties, the tragic death of a loved one, etc. Many look to these as God’s failing them. It fails to see the brokenness of our world. Many look at the prosperity of another as a sign of God’s blessing. God may bless one with great wealth, health, and a peaceful life but more often in Scripture, we read of the struggles and the suffering of those faithful to the calling of God at the hands of those whom God has chosen. For the rich, young ruler, the issue was that to give up his wealth was to lose his identity. His standing defined him and to lay that aside was too much and too great a cost. When confronted with loss, we often find what it is we place our confidence in. Sadly, wealth and prosperity tend to be the traps of the deceiver. This is not because it is inherently bad. Solomon was given wisdom in his youth, but when the opulence of life became great for him, he was led astray through his many wives and the perception of who he was as king. It’s easy to forget God when you want for nothing. We can become rich in the world and poor in our souls. God seeks us to let go of the things of this world not because He desires us to be poor, but when God matters more in our lives the things of this world matter less and this is where we will find peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
