How Far?

Who is the man who fears Yahweh? He will instruct him in the way he should choose.

Psalm 25:12, LSB

Isn’t it amazing when we fully lay things in the hand of God how the stress of it lifts? I know in my experience, there is a great sense of peace that falls upon me. Unfortunately, this happens when I come to my senses and realize that there is nothing, I can do about it. I don’t think I am that different. God wants us to let go and let Him be the guide always. Human nature, especially for the West, is to approach things with a “can do” attitude and do it yourself. When we think of the fear of God, it is not like a fear of the dark or the things that go bump in the night, but more like a fear out of awe. Most of us don’t want to do things that would be truly against God. We like to test boundaries, though. That child-like sense of seeing how far we can safely go never fully leaves us and God doesn’t want us to live skittish and afraid lives. God wants us to understand Him and His boundaries by being in His Word and in prayer to Him. He wants us to seek His guidance, not because we want to see how little we must do to be obedient, but to know how far we can go in service to Him. The boundaries we are given by God are not meant to bind us, but to free us and know His protection. In our fear of God, we find His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
