And Elisha was seeing this and he was crying out, “My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” And he saw Elijah no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces.
2 Kings 2:12, LSB
Elisha was chosen to carry Elijah's banner, and it was time for his mentor and teacher to go. Elijah would not go the normal way and we, probably, will not see our faith mentors and teachers go up to God in a whirlwind, but we will all experience the loss. It can be hard to move on when a season ends. In life, we have many who God places in our lives for a season, and circumstances outside our control may take them out of our lives. Whether it be through death, moving away, or having them pull out of our lives the pain of loss is left. Yet, we know our Lord God will carry us through it all. He will guide us in the paths which He desires. Our calling is to listen and be faithful. In these circumstances, a change will be seen in us, but others may not fully understand. It is a gift that God gives many of us to be able to reflect on those who have had great spiritual impacts in our lives. Often, we miss opportunities to reflect because of our fear of feeling pain and sadness. Our Lord desires us to allow sadness to flow over us in these moments so we may reclaim the joy and continue our journey with the parts they played in our lives. Elisha could have easily said goodbye to Elijah, but he desired to walk with his mentor and teacher until the end. Let us not lose sight of the promises of God as we grieve and let us hold always to the joy our Lord blessed us with in the people He has placed in our lives and in that, we may find peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
