“Then if you know how to give good gifts to your children, even though you are evil, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!”

Matthew 7:11, EHV

Most people like to think of themselves as good. To be called evil is offensive, but, if we are honest, we can easily find we are not truly as good as we like to think of ourselves. We want to believe in a middle ground. Yet, God does not give a middle ground. For God, it is either holy and good or not. Jesus’ words when speaking to His disciples are a reminder of our need for forgiveness. We need to be redeemed. At the time of Jesus, this was done through regular sacrifice. However, when reflected upon, how could one be certain if he offered the right sacrifices or enough? The standards of God are higher than we can attain and if we focus on this we may fall into despair. Jesus wanted His disciples to understand that even though we will fall short God will provide and to trust in His providence. If we can do things that are seen as good in our broken state, then God will provide even greater in His perfect state. When we are fully reliant on God and trust in His nature and His promises, we can find comfort in all the times of struggle knowing that He is a perfect father. God knows our needs and will provide. Let us hear these words of Christ and know the love of our Lord and be settled in His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
