In the year of King Uzziah’s death I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, with the train of His robe filling the temple.
Isaiah 6:1, LSB
Isaiah had been prophesying. God had been speaking with Isaiah, but now Isaiah is given a full vision of God in all His glory. Sitting in an exalted space within the temple. Not only this but there is given a specific time, so one could know when this occurred. It happened at the time of a good king’s death. The hope of Judah, but also one who had fallen in pride. The glory and splendor of God on full display before Isaiah and his response to it is a telling portion. Isaiah was fearful and humbled by this vision. He did not feel emboldened to approach the throne of God in the vision but realized his own sinfulness that could not stand in the presence of God. What a blessing it is to approach the throne of God as we remember Him when we are invited to the altar. When we come before God’s throne room as we receive His body and blood that passes over our lips cleansing us of all sin in our lives. It is an act that we, as followers of Christ, often repeat as our Lord, like the angel with the coal, calls us to Himself and purifies us to be bearers of His word and hope to a world that is caught up in sin. We proclaim it as ones redeemed of the sin that had bound us and restored to Christ. In His restoration, we may find our peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
