We hear the words “elect” or “predestined,” both represent our bound state. It is nice to believe that we can choose Christ, but if we are not called by God there is no choice to be had. Our only choice is to heed His call or rebel and reject it. It is a reality of our existence. King Nebuchadnezzar really had no choice in the things that he did and found out how little power he had near the end of his life when he lived like a wild beast for seven years. If he had humbled himself prior and come to God when he realized God’s power his story may have turned. Our crossroads come when confronted with the Gospel of Jesus Christ in our humbling to follow or standing bound in pride. If the Gospel moves a heart, it is the Holy Spirit who is sent by the Father to move a heart, for this we pray. As the Holy Spirit moves upon hearts and draws them in to know the Father and the Son salvation is found. New life breaks forth. The calling we receive from God is a constant humbling of our spirits and a submission to the will of our Lord. Jesus most profoundly revealed this in Gethsemane when He said, “Not my will but yours.” We are a bound people either bound in the love of the Father and the saving Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ or our pride and sinful desires. In Christ and Christ alone can we find our peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
