“Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.”
John 15:13–15, LSB
There is no secret code to the Christian faith. Jesus revealed to us through His Word all that is necessary for us to know. We are not meant to live with a sense of fear about tomorrow or the end. As followers of Christ, we have been promised through Christ all the freedoms which He has to Himself. At the same time, we are slaves or bondservants to Christ, we are free. We are no longer bound up in sin but are bound up in Christ and His glory which sets us free to live in the knowledge of our forgiveness. We walk with our Lord as friends would, not fearful of bringing the ire of a master but desirous to be honoring to our friend. When we are with our friends in the world, we don’t tend to seek to do things that will offend our friends, the same is true with Jesus. We are called to strive to live in the full knowledge of forgiveness afforded to us by our Lord and the new life promised to us in Him. In this, we, are meant to find our peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
