As obedient children, not being conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your conduct; because it is written, “YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.”

1 Peter 1:14–16, LSB

Though we are under the grace of our Lord God our sin is not excused. We are forgiven but are not meant to continue living as if we were of the world. We are not to willfully sin against God once we are aware of the sin that we have been forgiven. Like the adulterous woman thrown at the feet of Jesus to be stoned, we are to hear the words of our Lord, “Go and sin no more.” It is not as though we may not become caught in other sins or we may fall into bad habits that lead us to repeat the sin, God will forgive us when we repent, so we need not look for opportunities to sin with the knowledge that we will be forgiven. To willfully sin is a blasphemous act as it is a willful rebellion against God. Like the child who is told no and looks at the parent and does the act anyway, we are called not to stand against God and challenge Him and His grace. Ananias and Sapphira were not punished for keeping money for themselves, they were punished because they willfully lied and tried to keep their actions secret to appear differently than they were. We must not think that we can get away with the same things in our lives. God will not be mocked. Our Lord has set us apart in His gift on the Cross and we honor Christ by seeking to shine His light in our lives. We are called to be holy because our Lord is Holy and in Him alone can we find our peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
