Peter began to say to Him, “Behold, we have left everything and followed You.”

Mark 10:28, LSB

Fear responds, “We have given up everything!” Our Lord responds, “You have been given everything!” Our Lord calls us to let go of the things of this world and keep our focus on Him. The difficulty is that the world bombards us with things of which we are told we are to be fearful. The environment, the economy, war, the other, etc. Our Lord calls us to live and look at things differently. It doesn’t mean we are to be ignorant of it all and act as if there aren’t issues in the world, but we are to respond differently. He wants us to lay everything down at His feet, focus our attention on Him, and seek out His hand at work within the world. We can see His footprints before us if we are in His Word and lifting up prayers. Peter and the disciples were challenged as the rich young ruler was called to sell everything and give it to the poor, then come and follow Him. It wasn’t the possessions that were the issue but how they were of such great importance to the rich young man. God calls us to give up those things that stand before our God and follow Him. In Him, we will find the things that are truly valuable and will never wear out or be taken away.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
