Eternal Life

But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life.

Romans 6:22, ESV

We have been freed from sin and bound to Christ. This is a wonderful blessing, but it is important to remember that freedom from sin does not free us to do as we please. We are called to Christ’s side and He desires for all the life that we live to reflect His love for us. The greatest illusion that we have is the idea of free will because we either are serving our sinful desire or we are serving Christ, but never are we truly free in either instance. The illusion is that we are free in our service to sin, which we so often like to call our “free will.” The fruit of our being slaves, or my favorite way of putting it bondservants, to Christ, is that we are free from the fear and shame that so often plagues us when we live our lives in bondage to the sin that tempts us away. In and through Christ, we are being made holy and purged of all those things that drive us from Him. It is through the freedom that we receive in our bondage to our Lord that we fully understand the blessing that He gives us, eternal life.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
