“These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.” John 15:11, LSB

Luke 10:19–20, LSB

Our Lord wants us to know His joy and desires that we abide in His Word and His commandments. Abiding in our Lord by being more regularly in the Word may cause some of the unhelpful things in our lives to fall away. Things that once were thought to be fun may not look as attractive anymore. The converse is also true as we move away from things contrary to God’s will. This journey of faith is transformative in our lives; our Lord knew that would be the case. His purpose was to bring transformation. As followers of Christ, we are to find the completeness of our joy in Him. God always wanted this for His chosen. There are things of this world that may bring a moment of happiness, but a lot of misery after. A great example is the consumption of alcohol. One or two drinks from time to time may bring some great memories, but drunkenness can lead to a whole lot of regret. To become addicted will lead to a great amount of misery. In our Lord, we will find great hope and promise. He binds us in strong, healthy relationships. In Christ, we can know the fullness of love and know the greatest joys. In Him is where we may find peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
