Cisterns

Jeremiah 2:13

“For My people have done two evils: They have forsaken Me, The fountain of living waters, To hew for themselves cisterns, Broken cisterns That can hold no water.”

Jeremiah 2:13, LSB

God has always sought to be at the center of the heart of humanity. From the Garden and beyond our hearts have been easily distracted. From a delicious-looking fruit to all that glitters our hearts have sought satisfaction elsewhere. Yet, God does not forget His chosen. When He hears our cries, He comes to our aid. How often do we set up our lives with altars to idols? When we place our hope and happiness in something that is not of God, we have established for ourselves idols that will fail us all in the end. We have created for us cisterns that are broken and cannot sustain us. In Christ and Christ alone can we find the hope that is eternal. It is in Him and Him alone that life is contained. Everything else robs us of life, but our Lord gives us life in abundance. He fills us and keeps a reserve for us to carry on in times of distress. Sadly, many forget God and move on in directions far from Him pursuing dreams that have no life, seeking after a fleeting hope that evaporates quickly in times of distress. Yet, our Lord calls out and waits with arms wide open hoping that we will turn to Him and find peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
