“Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’”

John 3:7, LSB

Born-again? What does it mean? As followers of Christ, we are all born-again. Some like to use this as a differentiation between those that are church-attenders and those that are “true” believers. Yet, this is an over assumption and does not speak to the heart. Some will have an awakening in their faith lives and their faith will become invigorated and more alive than it had been, others will have a conversion experience and become changed, but some are steeped in the faith from the cradle and have a deeply ingrained faith that abides. The reality of our faith and being born again is that, like our first birth, we did not choose but it was born out of us as we were born out of the womb. We are born out of the world and into the faith of Jesus Christ. We are born out of darkness and carried into the light. To be born again is what happens to us all when the original sin is washed away in the waters of baptism. We are born again as Christ’s promises are written on our hearts. It may take an awakening for some raised in the faith to realize, that the action is of God. For some this realization will lead them back to the Church and for those who were never raised in the faith it will lead them to the waters of Baptism to be washed and renewed in Christ. As we walk in our new birth, our eyes are opened, and we can know the promises of Christ are given for us and can be confident in the forgiveness we have received. In this, we can know peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
