And when Jesus heard this, He said to him, “One thing you still lack: sell all that you possess and distribute it to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven. And come, follow Me.”
Luke 18:22, LSB
What does it cost to follow Jesus? All of you. The rich young ruler came to Jesus with a heart full and ready to follow Jesus, but he was not ready to give all of himself to God. One might believe that it was his great wealth that was the issue because we often falsely believe that money is the root of all evil. The issue wasn’t the young man’s wealth. The issue was his love of his wealth. God is not happy with our devotion being divided with other idols in our lives. Those things we are unwilling to give up or let go of in our lives are the things that our Lord is calling us to give over to Him. The greatest issue that God had with His chosen people, the children of Israel, wasn’t that they didn’t believe in Him, but they were also going after idols. The idea that one could worship the one true God, and others is the trap that many become caught up within. A little bit of evil is the whole pie. Evil is like a camel, if the nose enters the tent the body will follow. This is how sin enslaves us. We believe that we can just have a taste, but it is that taste that kills us. Thankfully, our Lord is merciful and gracious. He forgives us for our failures. He frees us from the bondage of sin. Let the things that try to cling to you go and know His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
