And Jesus said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.
Matthew 8:26, ESV
When we become afraid of losing, we have already lost. One thing I learned as a wrestler and this may be true of any sport, if you can make someone believe you can beat them, even if you are of equal skill, you will win. Fear and being afraid are not the same. When fear overcomes you, you become afraid, and this saps you of strength and courage. A cowardly person is overcome with fear and can be dangerous because he or she will act irrationally and will do things that could bring greater harm to themselves or others. On the mat or in the field this will cause mistakes to happen that will bring about a loss, in life, it can be even worse for them and others. Jesus spoke of this when He rebuked the disciples, the word afraid can also be translated as cowardly. The disciples responded in fear of the waves they saw crashing around them. It was rational in their minds to be afraid because they were afraid the boat was going to be swamped. Jesus, when awakened by them full of fear, showed them that their fear had kept from them the true reality and in a moment calmed the storm. They had lost sight of the mission ahead and had lost their focus. We, too, can lose our focus when we only see the changing world, but when we focus on the One who is in control our hearts may be calmed and we can continue in the message which we are meant to carry out into the world. In so doing, not only do we find peace but can bring peace to those caught up in the chaos of the world in the sharing of Christ and the hope that comes from Him and Him alone.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
