“In view of this, I also do my best to maintain always a conscience without fault both before God and before men.”
Acts 24:16, LSB
In life, disagreements will occur. People have differing views about almost everything, but that does not mean that we must be disagreeable. As Paul is recorded giving his defense before the governor, he highlights the false accusations by pointing out where he was when he was seized and the issue that is really at hand. Paul could say this calmly because he knew to whom he belonged and who he was representing. Our witness in the world is centered upon our character. There are times I wish my frustration didn’t get the best of me. I am sure that many can relate. As we live out our faith and are always open and prepared to share with others, we will find there will be those with whom we will find disagreements. Those who disagree will do and act as though the issue is not within themselves but will deflect their issues onto us and our faith. If we allow their actions to dictate how we react, we have lost. However, if we remain faithful in our words and actions without malice, the Gospel is not hidden and our conscience can be clear regardless of what may be said. When we keep our focus on Christ and the faith He has given, it is where we keep our consciences clean and can stand with boldness before God entrusting ourselves to His mercy and care.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
